Celebrating Excellence: Film and Literature Awards at Kendal Mountain Festival

Here at Kendal Mountain Festival, we are proud of our commitment to honouring excellence in adventure storytelling and filmmaking.

Among the many accolades conferred over the course of the year and celebrated at the Festival, four prestigious award categories and prizes stand out: our International Film Competition, the Kailas x Kendal Mountain Film Grant, the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature and the Nature Chronicles Prize.

Each of these awards embodies our dedication to celebrating creativity, courage, and the profound connection between humans and nature. Through these awards, we hope to not only honour the achievements of exceptional individuals but also inspire future generations to create and connect with the world around them.

International Film Competition

Our International Film Competition is a prestigious and globally recognised set of awards that celebrates the finest in adventure storytelling and filmmaking. Through this competition, we champion the art of filmmaking and inspire audiences.

Each year we are blown away by the diverse array of entries from filmmakers around the world, showcasing a rich tapestry of stories that highlight the beauty, challenges, and triumphs of the human spirit in the great outdoors.

Prize categories include Best Short, Best Creative, Best Adventure & Exploration, Best Sport, Change Maker Award, Best Environment, Community & Culture, Best Climbing, Best Mountain, Judges Special Prize, People’s Choice Award and The Grand Prize.

We welcome submissions from all filmmakers, from across the world; those films that are successful and selected into our International Film Competition will be judged by an independent jury of film and mountain professionals. With over 500 entries each year, our jury alumni includes Director of Telluride Mountainfilm Suzan Bezera, Founder of Run Dem Crew Charlie Dark MBE, Author and Broadcaster Mary-Ann Ochta and Vimeo Staff Picks Curator Ian Durkin.

This year we are thrilled to announce that our jury features returning Jury Chair Jonathan Hourigan, OUTO Founder Phil Young, award-winning filmmaker Henry Kamara, Mountainfilm Festival Director, Crystal Merrill, and Banff Mountain Festival Manager Megan Cotterell.

The Kailas x Kendal Mountain Film Grant

The Kailas x Kendal Mountain Film Grant is aimed at empowering independent filmmakers. Sponsored by Kailas, a leading outdoor gear brand; this grant provides financial support to filmmakers working on original projects centred around world-wide mountain ranges, expedition and adventure stories.

In 2024, Kailas supported filmmakers with £40,000 worth of grants plus a full provision of expedition kit from their range at a value of £12,000 per production. Kendal Mountain Festival supported the winning teams with development meetings throughout production, plus provided mentorship to a selection of runners-up.

By supporting the creation of new films, the aim of this grant is to enrich the adventure film genre, offering filmmakers valuable opportunities through both financial assistance and mentorship.

This year, we are thrilled to announce that the grant will be renewed at £40,000 with submissions opening early September and closing early November.

The Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature

Named in honour of the legendary mountaineers and writers Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker, the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature has become one of the most coveted accolades in the world of mountain writing.

Established in 1983, The Award recognises and rewards outstanding literature concerned with the mountain environment through the genres of non-fiction, fiction and poetry.

We are proud to have hosted the Boardman Tasker Award Ceremony at the Festival for over 20 years, with the renowned mountaineer and author Stephen Venables serving as host for the past decade. This year, Stephen will pass the honour to Professor Helen Mort, a previous Boardman Tasker winner, celebrated author, academic, climber, and poet.

Mountain Equipment is the official Supporting Partner for the Boardman Tasker. Terry Stephenson, Head of Marketing at Mountain Equipment, says: “Climbing, mountaineering, and Alpinism in particular, have always been more than just a physical pursuit, and mountaineering literature more than just a physical record. Few other activities can have compelled so many of its participants to express themselves through writing, and even fewer seen so many of its most celebrated protagonists prove their worth as authors, a fact that the Award has sought to recognise and celebrate.

For sixty years we have been closely associated with Alpinism and we owe much to Pete and Joe, and those that they climbed with, not only for their achievements but for the generations since that they have challenged and inspired. We hope that by supporting the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature we can encourage others to experience and understand the mountain environment through literature.”

The Nature Chronicles Prize

A relatively new addition to Kendal Mountain Festival's roster of awards, the Nature Chronicles Prize celebrates outstanding works of non-fiction prose that respond to the time we are in and the world as it is.

The aim of the award is to find engaging, unique, essay-length non-fiction between 2,000 - 8,000 words. The winner will receive £10,000 and five runners up £1,000 each. All six winning entries will be published in an anthology.

Having hosted this award for the first time in 2022, we are thrilled that the Nature Chronicles Prize is returning to Kendal Mountain Festival in 2024. Together, we are committed to celebrating new and innovative works that challenge established notions of nature writing.

Keep an eye out to secure your tickets to the Award ceremony, taking place at the 2024 Kendal Mountain Festival.
